“Wish you all a Happy Puttari Namme”
“Wish you all a Happy Puttari Namme”
Today we celebrate Puttari at Coorg (Kodagu).
The district is all set to celebrate the famous Huttari festival, being celebrated on the occasion of ‘Suggi’ period.
Huttari (Puttari in Kodava language) means new rice, indicating the welcoming of Dhanyalakshmi.
Puttari ( Huttari ) is the traditional harvest festival known for a variety of folk songs and dances being displayed. It is observed in November / December. Each village presents it own set of discipline and dances during the annual fairs at its temple, which is the main center of cultural activities.
When the Paddy crop is ready for harvest, the villagers chant “Poli Poli Deva” and a little crop is cut, bound in small bunches and is handed out to all those present during the occasion. The bunch of Paddy crop will be taken home by the folks and is preserved as a sign of prosperity.

Preparations
Each and every house appears enthusiastic over receiving Dhanyalakshmi, wishing that she will accompany them forever. Individuals, irrespective of their age, have started enjoying with crackers.
The Huttari festival is usually celebrated on the New Moon Day either in November or December. As part of the first harvest of paddy, a variety of programmes are celebrated throughout a whole week. People of all classes, depending on agriculture, participate in the fest. The Kodavas gather at their ‘Ainmane’ (native home) on ‘Polud’ Day (the day of harvesting the first crop). The potter brings the Huttari pot, the carpenter brings ‘Kutti’ (a basket to carry the new crop), while they will get rice, banana, salt, coconut oil and several eatables in return for their contributions.
On the Puttari day, the whole family assemble in their ain mane (the common family house) which is decorated with flowers and green mango and banana leaves. Specific foods are prepared: thambuttu, puttari, kari, and poli poli. Then the eldest member of the family hands a sickle to the head of the family, and one of the women leads a procession to the paddy fields, with a lit lamp in her hands. The path leading to the field is decorated. A gunshot is fired to mark the beginning of the harvest, with chanting of “Poli Poli Deva” (prosperity) by all the people present there. Then the symbolic harvesting of the crop begins. The rice is cut and stacked and tied in odd numbers, and is then carried home, to be offered to the gods there.
The younger people then burst firecrackers and revel, symbolizing prosperity. Groups of youngsters then visit the neighboring houses and show off their dancing skills, and are given monetary gifts. A week later, this money is pooled and a community dinner of the entire village) is celebrated. All the family members gather for this meal. Dinner normally consists of meat dishes such as pork and fish curry. Alcoholic drinks are also served at such feasts.
After some religious performances, the corns are tied at different places in the house, including the granary and worshipping place. Mass dinner is arranged for all, where ‘Elakki putt’ like eatables will be the main sweets. Crackers will add colours to the moments.

Kaveri Sankramana
The Kaveri Sankramana festival normally takes place in mid-October. It is associated with the river Kaveri.
At time, when the sun enters Tula Rasi (Tula sankramana), a fountain from a small tank fills the larger holy tank at Talakaveri. Thousands of people gather to dip in this holy water. The water is collected in bottles and reaches every home throughout Kodagu. This holy water is called Theertha, and is preserved in all Kodava homes. A spoonful of this water is fed to the dying, in the belief that they will attain moksha (spiritual emancipation) and gain entry to heaven.
On this day, married women wearing new silk saris perform puja to a vegetable, symbolizing the goddess Kaveri. The vegetable is usually a cucumber or a coconut, wrapped in a piece of red silk cloth and decorated with flowers and jewels. The elder members of the family ceremonially bless the younger. Then an older married woman draws water from the well and starts cooking. The menu of the day is dosa and vegetable curry (usually pumpkin curry) and payasa.this is the only festival among the Kodavas where only vegetarian food is had and served.
